OBJECTIVE:

Students will prepare for Networking Night and identify their personal goals for the event

REQUIRED PREP:

Transform your room – Next Gen sessions should be different from typical classes — change the atmosphere of your classroom and get ready for your first session!

Opening Huddle

Goal: Conduct the cohort ritual and mood check.

Feel free to play music to generate energy and set the vibe!

Opening Ritual: Conduct your opening ritual! 

Mood Check: Gather the students into a circle (standing or sitting – keep comfort in mind)!

Activity 1 - Elevator Pitch - 25 mins

An elevator pitch is a way of introducing yourself, getting across a key point or two, and making a connection with someone. It’s called an elevator pitch because it takes roughly the amount of time you’d spend riding an elevator with someone. Teachers and Mentors, share your elevator pitch.

Using the following guidelines allow students 5-10 minutes to create their own speeches. Afterwards, allow a few students to share their speeches. 

  1. Introduce yourself – Ex. Hello, my name is …
  2. Tell them about what you do – Ex. I am a senior at Riverdale High School. I am involved in the Next Gen program, I work part-time as a customer service representative at Apple, and etc. 
  3. Explain what you can do for them – Ex. With my customer service experience I could serve as your administrative assistant.

Ask for what you want – Ex. Could we set up a time to talk more about the requirements of the position? What’s the best way to reach you? Here’s my card.”

Activity 2: Social Networking Skills - 15 mins

Teachers & Mentors, share and discuss the following networking skills:

When networking, there are some basic social skills to keep in mind:

  • Be courageous 
  • Engage in humble inquiry
  • Use social media wisely
  • Be natural, but be prepared 
  • Make the interaction rewarding and positive 
  • Stay in touch

Discussion Questions:

  • Do any of these skills seem difficult? If so, why?
  • How does the thought of networking make you feel?
  • Do you feel prepared for Networking Night?
  • Is there a particular industry you want to connect with at Networking Night?

*Allow students to discuss openly any additional questions they may have.

Closing - 5 mins

Closing Huddle:

  • End by collectively performing your exit ritual! 
  • Remind students of the next session!
