OBJECTIVE:
Students will explore how their personal story, skills, and values contribute to both their professional identity and their developing sense of purpose.
REQUIRED PREP:
Transform your room – Next Gen sessions should be different from typical classes — change the atmosphere of your classroom and get ready for your first session!
Opening
Goal: Conduct the cohort ritual and mood check.
Opening Huddle: Feel free to play music to generate energy and set the vibe!
- Opening Ritual: Conduct your opening ritual!
- Mood Check: Gather the students into a circle (standing or sitting – keep comfort in mind)!
Activity 1: Identity x Impact Table Talk
In group discussion or pairs, students discuss the following questions. Post them on the board or hand them out as cards.
- What are parts of your identity that you’re proud to carry into your future career or community?
- What lived experiences have shaped the way you see the world or support others?
- How can those experiences make you powerful in a job, classroom, or organization?
When have you felt most aligned—like who you are and what you were doing matched?
Tip: Listen in and affirm moments of insight. Share examples of how different identities and lived experiences bring unique power and leadership into every field.
Activity 2: “My Voice, My Value” Statements
Invite students to write a short statement that brings together identity and direction:
“Because I am ___, I can ___.”
EXAMPLES:
“Because I am the oldest sibling in my family, I can lead with patience and empathy.”
“Because I grew up navigating two languages, I can connect with people across cultures.”
“Because I’ve overcome self-doubt, I can show others they’re not alone.”
Allow time for silent writing, followed by an optional share-out. Students can post their statement on a class wall or keep it in their journal.
Closing Huddle - 5 mins
Closing Huddle:
- End by collectively performing your exit ritual!
- Remind students of the next session!
