OBJECTIVE:
Students will practice introducing themselves with clarity and confidence, identify talking points that reflect their interests and goals, and develop questions they can ask professionals that reflect genuine curiosity and purpose.
REQUIRED PREP:
Transform your room – Next Gen sessions should be different from typical classes — change the atmosphere of your classroom and get ready for your first session!
Opening
Goal: Conduct the cohort ritual and mood check.
Opening Huddle: Feel free to play music to generate energy and set the vibe!
- Opening Ritual: Conduct your opening ritual!
- Mood Check: Gather the students into a circle (standing or sitting – keep comfort in mind)!
Activity 1: Interview for the job
Students craft and practice a short 30–45 second introduction using this people-centered prompt framework:
“Hi, my name is ___, and I’m a senior at ___. I’m interested in ___ because ___.
Something I’m currently working on or excited about is ___.
I’m looking forward to learning more about ___ tonight.”
Tips:
- Encourage students to use their authentic voice—this isn’t a performance.
- Support those who are unsure about interests by helping them identify curiosity as a valid starting point.
Offer sample intros from different personality types (introverted, bubbly, goal-driven, still figuring it out).
Peer Practice:
- Pair students up for 2 rounds of practice.
- After each round, partners share one word that describes the other’s presence (e.g., “genuine,” “confident,” “thoughtful”).
Activity 2: Discussion
“I’m rooted in ___, and I’m reaching for __.”
- Each student shares their statement aloud in a circle.
(Example: “I’m rooted in my family’s sacrifices, and I’m reaching for a full ride to college.”) - This practice affirms students’ inner strength and outward goals in a supportive, collective space.
- Once the circle is complete, create a rooted wall or construction paper. Create a “Rooted Wall” in the classroom or hallway where students can anonymously or proudly post their statements. It can serve as a visual anchor throughout the year.
Closing Huddle - 5 mins
Closing Huddle:
- End by collectively performing your exit ritual!
- Remind students of the next session!
