OBJECTIVE:

Students will deepen their connection to the goals they’ve identified by exploring the “why” behind their aspirations. Through peer conversations and guided reflection, they’ll develop motivation and clarity to carry their intentions forward.

REQUIRED PREP:

Transform your room – Next Gen sessions should be different from typical classes — change the atmosphere of your classroom and get ready for your first session!

Opening

Goal: Conduct the cohort ritual and mood check.

Opening Huddle: Feel free to play music to generate energy and set the vibe!

  1. Opening Ritual: Conduct your opening ritual!
  2. Mood Check: Gather the students into a circle (standing or sitting – keep comfort in mind)!

Activity 1: Values Drive Conversation

  • Place value cards or a list of values on tables (examples: growth, independence, family, creativity, community, security, leadership, etc.).
  • In small groups or pairs, students choose 2–3 values that feel connected to their senior year goals.
  • Guided questions for discussion:

    • “Which value(s) connect most to your goals this year?”
    • “Where do you think that value comes from in your life?”
    • “How does keeping that value in mind help you stay focused?”
    • “When have you lived out that value in the past?”

Activity 2: Discussion

“I’m rooted in ___, and I’m reaching for __.”

  • Each student shares their statement aloud in a circle.
(Example: “I’m rooted in my family’s sacrifices, and I’m reaching for a full ride to college.”)
  • This practice affirms students’ inner strength and outward goals in a supportive, collective space.
  • Once the circle is complete, create a rooted wall or construction paper. Create a “Rooted Wall” in the classroom or hallway where students can anonymously or proudly post their statements. It can serve as a visual anchor throughout the year.

Closing Huddle - 5 mins

Closing Huddle:

  1. End by collectively performing your exit ritual!
  2. Remind students of the next session!
