OBJECTIVE:

Students will identify 2–3 personal core values and apply them to real-life scenarios, using discussion and reflection to examine how they would respond in situations that challenge or call upon those values.

REQUIRED PREP:

Teacher: – Transform your room – Next Gen sessions should be different from typical classes — change the atmosphere of your classroom and get ready for your first session!

Opening Huddle (5 mins):

Goal: Conduct the cohort ritual and mood check.

Feel free to play music to generate energy and set the vibe!

  • Opening Ritual: Conduct your opening ritual!
  • Mood Check: Gather the students into a circle (standing or sitting – keep comfort in mind)!

Activity 1 (20 mins)

Mentors: Choose Your Core Values

Instructions:

Give students this list of 25–30 values.

  • Students choose 3–5 values that resonate most with who they are or want to be.
  • In pairs or small groups, students share:
  • Why they chose those values
  • Which value feels easiest to live by, and which one gets tested the most

Activity 2

Teacher: What Would You Do? Scenario Discussion

Instructions:

  • Present 3–4 short scenarios that reflect real situations students might face this year or beyond.
  • After reading each scenario, students reflect independently or in small groups:
    • What value is being challenged here?
    • What would you do—and why?
    • Is there a different choice that also honors your values?

Sample Scenarios:

  1. You notice a classmate being excluded or mocked online, but saying something might make you a target too.

  2. You’re offered an opportunity, but it means someone else might miss out. Do you take it?

  3. A friend asks you to cover for them when they break a rule. No one else would know.

  4. You’re in a group project, and one person isn’t doing their part. Do you speak up or stay silent?

Mentor/Teacher Tip: There are no perfect answers—what matters is the reasoning behind the choice. Encourage honest, nuanced dialogue.

Closing Huddle

  1. End by collectively performing your exit ritual!
  2. Remind students of the next session!
